Patchouli Essential Oil has been valued for thousands of years, so much so that early European traders exchanged one pound of Patchouli for one pound of gold! Ancient medicine like Ayurveda in India held Patchouli oil in high esteem for its uses on the skin. It’s believed that Patchouli’s reputation as an aphrodisiac stems from its use in India with Tantric practices. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Patchouli became a popular fabric fragrance to repel moths, and through trade its popularity in Europe began to grow. The Pogostemon cablin plant is a bushy herb with pale pink flowers. It’s actually related to Lavender, Mint, and Sage. Patchouli can be traced to Southeast Asia and is now cultivated in Indonesia, India, China, and Malaysia.  This light yellow or brown oil is gathered through steam distillation of the plant’s lightly fragrant leaves and flowers. Unlike other oils, Patchouli actually gets better with age! The oil darkens into a deep amber, and the scent becomes smoother and richer. Pure, unadulterated Patchouli essential oil boasts a strong earthy and subtly sweet aroma that’s easy to recognise. Patchouli is one of the most versatile oils on the market as an antidepressant, antiseptic, antiphlogistic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cicatrisant, deodorant, diuretic, fungicide, and sedative. Emotionally, Patchouli essential oil is a grounding oil that balances the emotions and encourages mindfulness. Since Patchouli also stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, it can help ease feelings of anger, anxiety, and anxiousness. Physically, Patchouli is very well known as an aphrodisiac because it stimulates hormones and increases libido. It’s been considered a natural impotency remedy for years, especially when blended with Ylang Ylang. Patchouli also has the power to soothe inflammation and reduce conditions like arthritis and gout. It’s also a skincare favourite to soothe cuts, burns, and insect bites, particularly along with Lavender and Geranium. Favourite essential oil blends for Patchouli include Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Myrrh, and Sandalwood. It’s also popular with Peppermint when applied to the forehead or temples to ease headaches.
