Marjoram essential oil may not be as well known as Lavender or Tea Tree, but it has a rich history as a sacred plant in India, Egypt, and Greece. In fact, the Greeks saw the marjoram plant as a symbol of love and honour, and according to legends Aphrodite used Marjoram to cure her son’s wounds. By the 18th century, medical experts discovered Marjoram’s value to prevent nervous disorders and poor circulation, and the plant gradually worked its way into the collection of essential oils used today.

The Marjoram plant originated in the Mediterranean region and is now cultivated around the world, particularly in Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, and now even the United States. It’s an herb with smooth, oval-shaped leaves that grow flowers. These leaves and tops are carefully picked between August and September and steam-distilled to obtain Marjoram essential oil.

Marjoram essential oil is pale yellow by nature and offers a warm aroma that is simultaneously herbaceous, woody, and spicy. Many people compare it to a blend of Tea Tree and Nutmeg. The pure oil has a number of properties that can improve physical and mental health including as an analgesic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antiviral, carminative, digestive, expectorant, sedative, and more!

Emotionally, Marjoram essential oil is a very effective relaxant, so it’s a favourite next to Lavender to alleviate insomnia and other sleeping difficulties. It is known to blend well with Clary Sage for a powerful calming combination. The oil’s quality as a relaxant also helps it battle stress and anxiety, especially when diffused into the air.

Physically, Marjoram essential oil is best known for its ability to alleviate muscle aches and spasms, especially from arthritis and rheumatism. It offers muscles a warm, soothing action that brings almost immediate relief. As a culinary herb, Marjoram naturally facilitates digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes in the stomach. This oil’s carminative properties also makes it valuable for reducing the effects of asthma, bronchitis, and sinus problems.

Marjoram oil blends nicely with Bergamot, Cypress, Lavender, and Orange essential oils. 15 drops of each of Marjoram and Lavender in two cups water, for example, can be sprayed onto linens to encourage a more restful sleep. Marjoram also works powerfully with Peppermint oil to soothe aching joints and muscles.
