If you’ve never heard of amla oil, it’s time we share with you one of haircare's best kept secrets. Known for its traditional roots in ayurvedic wellness and Indian skin and hair care, it’s the ideal addition to your daily care routines.

Let’s dive in!

What Is Amla?

Amla, also known as gooseberry, is a small citric fruit that is native to the Indian subcontinent. While it is a ‘fruit’, it is probably one of the most sour-tasting citrus fruits out there. While great for consumption raw and in cooked or chutney form, amla also makes for great oil. The amla oil is made by soaking dry gooseberry fruits in a carrier oil for a few days. This is then purified and used in people’s care routine. It has long been used as a traditional way to nourish hair, scalp and roots.

What Is Amla Oil Good for?

Considering it’s packed with nutrients and has a lovely citric aroma, amla oil is a favourite for hair care. It is commonly used pre or post-shower on the scalp and roots. It’s great for a soothing scalp massage before you have a shower, but also great to keep your roots feeling hydrated after you shower. It’s great for improving and maintaining hair health by keeping your scalp feeling fresh and keeping dryness at bay. And if you’re wondering, can i put amla oil on my hair everyday, yes you can!

How to Use Amla Oil to Grow Your Hair?

Amla oil works best when used pre-shower and left on as a hair mask before washing it off. Here are a few tips before your next ‘everything’ shower to ensure that you’re making the best use of it:

Warm Amla Oil

Heat the oil slightly by leaving the container in a bowl full of hot water. This helps bring it up to temperature and enhance the sensory experience of massaging it into your scalp.

Massage Gently Into Scalp

After combing out the knots in your hair, use your fingertips and dip into the oil. Start slowly applying it to your hair and scalp, using your fingers to gently massage into your roots. Take your time with it! Enjoying the comforting sensation of the warm oil and the massage is definitely part of the process.

Let It Rest

Keep the oil in your hair for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This helps the oil seep properly into your scalp and absorb all of the oil. This way, when you have a shower, the oil mask leaves your locks feeling hydrated. If you feel like your hair and scalp is oily to begin with, we recommend washing your hair right after application.

What Is the Best Indian Oil for Hair Growth?

Amla oil is definitely one of the best oils used in India that could be highly beneficial for those who use it on a regular basis. Coconut oil is also another favourite that has plenty of benefits when implemented in your routine, for your skin and hair!
