Whether you’re ready or not, it’s that time of year again! The air is warmer, the birds are chirping, and your house needs some serious cleaning TLC. After a winter stuck inside with dry hot air and far too many germs, you are ready to start the overwhelming task of spring cleaning. Rather than load up on chemical-based cleaners from the store, it’s a much easier and healthier option to use essential oils during this year’s spring cleaning bonanza. As you get ready to tackle the bathrooms, bedrooms, carpets, and kitchen, these essential oils will be your biggest allies.

The Cleansing Power of Essential Oils

You may not expect such small bottles of oil to wield such power, but they really do! Many essential oils possess antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral powers that can help to effortlessly kill the unwanted germs and bacteria in your house without any use of dangerous chemicals.

Certain essential oils are incredibly popular for cleaning because they not only harness potent cleaning powers but also smell amazing. Lemon, Tea Tree, Lavender, and Eucalyptus are just a few of the oils you’ll see repeated in the recipes below. So stock up and prepare for a house that is both sparkling clean and irresistibly scented.

Purify the Air

Air quality takes a big hit in the winter since the windows must stay closed shut against the shiver-inducing temperatures, but spring is the best time to get rid of stale air and purify your home. You can do this a few ways.

Invest in a diffuser, which will allow you to consistently keep essential oils floating through the air and smelling incredible. You can also blend 1 ½ cups of water with eight drops each of tea tree, lemon, and eucalyptus oil and spray all of your closets and bathrooms with a fresh scent.

Wipe Down Frequently Used Surfaces

Think carefully about how many surfaces you and your children touch every single day. It’s not just counters and sinks, either. Door knobs, car dials, and faucet handles as well. Even the TV remote and computer keyboard could use a thorough wipedown, especially after the germs of winter. A blend of sandalwood, clove, and wild orange oils will sanitize and disinfect any surface, button, or switch to kill the nasty bacteria still lingering.

Wash the Windows

Windows are one of the most ignored parts of the house, but spring cleaning is a time to hit every nook and cranny! A long winter of snow, salt, and wind will have your windows looking rather dingy, so combine water, vinegar, and a citrus oil like wild orange or grapefruit to spruce those windows right up. Just spray the combination and wipe down with a cloth or paper towels. Now it’s time to let the fresh air in!

Get Rid of Your Vacuum’s Odor

Did you know that the nasty odor your vacuum blasts out every time you need to clean the carpets can actually be controlled and neutralized? All you need to do is soak a few cotton balls in 5 to 10 drops of lemon essential oil. Add the soaked cotton balls to your vacuum canister, and the oil will efficiently diffuse out of your vacuum and into your home. You’ll not only enjoy the fresh scent, but you’ll also rest easy knowing that even the dirty vacuum air has been purified!

Mop the Floors

Mopping the floors doesn’t require a $15 cleaning solution from a big box store. All you need to do is fill a bucket with water, add 1 cup vinegar, and 15 to 20 drops of your favorite cleaning oils. We recommend a blend of peppermint and lemon! Just mix and mop like you always would, but this time know that your floor is being cleaned with a solution so safe that it’s perfectly okay for your dog to lick.

Once you begin using essential oils around your house, you’ll wonder how you ever cleaned without them! They really are, well, essential.
