  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 tbsp liquid cooking oil
  • Your choice of food colouring
  • 6-8 drops of essential oil

Simply stir the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together in a saucepan, then add the water, cooking oil, and food colouring until smooth. Heat on medium-low and stir until the ingredients form into balls. Remove from heat after the mixture feels like playdough, let cool for 4 minutes, and then knead in your essential oils.

Special tip: Store in refrigerator in airtight container for best results.

Extra special tip: If you know any children that struggle to pay attention and concentrate, blend three drops Peppermint with three drops Orange essential oil. This blend will encourage focus in a play-oriented manner.

Sandalwood – Benefits, Uses and Interesting Facts

 

The spicy, woody, warm, sweet aroma of Sandalwood makes it a very important ingredient in oriental perfumes. Almost 90% of East Indian Sandalwood is used in perfumes, soaps and cosmetics.

The Sandalwood tree reaches maturity at age 40 and reaches heights of 50 feet. The centre of the trunk is called the heartwood and it is the heartwood and the roots which contain the beautifully fragrant oil.

The greatest oil content is reached at maturity and steam distillation is used to extract the oil. One mature tree can yield up to 200 kg of oil.

Santalum Album

Santalum Album is indigenous to South India and is unfortunately nearly extinct. Years of poaching and over-harvesting due to huge demands of the perfume industry has taken its toll.

The ecologically responsible alternative to Indian Sandalwood is grown on a large scale in Western Australia. Here the tree grows to a height of about 20 feet and bears fruit within a period of 5-10 years.

Australian Sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum)

Australian Sandalwood has a woody soft scent with a balsamic undertone.

The exporting of Australian Sandalwood to China goes as far back as the mid 19th century in 1844. The Chinese used the oil to produce incense for Buddhist worship.

The Australian Sandalwood Tree is native to a large portion of Western Australia, where it grows about 20 feet tall and bears fruit within five to ten years. The stem, branches, and root ball are all placed through steam distillation to extract Sandalwood Australian essential oil. This distillation process can take four to seven days, which contributes to the oil’s cost.

Due to its popularity, the Australian government has limited harvesting to sustainable levels. This has helped this popular oil to remain an ecologically responsible alternative to wild Indian Sandalwood.

New Caledonian Sandalwood (Santalum Austrocaledonicum)

New Caledonian Sandalwood essential oil is a variety cultivated sustainably to meet the demand for Sandalwood without endangering the Santalum Album.

The New Caledonian Sandalwood tree is native to the South Pacific island of New Caledonia. The small tree flowers after a period of 6-7 years. Fruit matures in a short period of three months.  Sandalwood is obtained by using the process of steam distillation of the wood.

To produce valuable Sandalwood oil with high fragrance levels, Santalum trees need to be a minimum of 15 years old.

Interesting Facts About Santalum Album

It is an evergreen tree that grows from Sandalwood fruits resembling small black berries. Germination from the seeds of the fruits takes about 20 days.

The roots of these seedlings attach themselves to nearby plants, grasses and trees. The young tree depends on other plants for nourishment for a period of 7 years and in doing so cause the other plants to die.

5 Essential Oils to Use as Natural Insect Repellents

  • Remember that your pet is smaller than you, so he only needs a fraction of the essential oils that you would use.
  • Always, always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil or grapeseed oil. If your pet is small, always limit oil use to 5 drops, and be sure to dilute up to 90% before application.
  • Stay far away from the eyes, nose, and private areas. Sounds like common sense, but a reminder can’t hurt.
  • Cats are more sensitive than dogs, and they cannot withstand “hot” oils like Clove, Oregano, CInnamon, Wintergreen, Thyme, Birch, and Tea Tree. They also may be sensitive to citrus oils, so observe and err on the side of caution.

Simply buy a diffuser or blend a few drops of essential oils into a water bottle and spray on your dog’s bed or favorite space. You can also apply diluted essential oils topically to your pet’s body, even on your dog’s toes and pads.

  • SKINCARE: Lavender and Frankincense are two of the most popular skincare essential oils because they can clean the skin and sooth irritations. Use a cotton ball or ear swab to blend coconut oil and 1 drop of essential oil, then apply it on the impacted area. You can also add a few drops into your dog’s shampoo to stimulate essential oil action during every bath.
  • DIGESTIVE DISCOMFORT: We all know how miserable stomach problems can be, so we don’t want our pets suffering any longer than can be helped! One drop each of ginger, Peppermint, and Tarragon make a great digestive blend when added to a bit of carrier oil and rubbed directly on your pup’s stomach.
  • RESPIRATORY SUPPORT: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Laurel Leaf are the most popular essential oils to include in a respiratory blend their components can clear airways and support healthy lungs. Combine a few drops in a spoonful of coconut oil and apply to your pet’s paw or scruff of the neck. You can also diffuse this blend into the air.
  • EAR HEALTH: This one applies only to dogs. Ears can become dirty and swollen very easily, so it’s important to care for them in a safe way. Mix 2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Tea Tree, and 2 drops of Geranium in a tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply the mixture to your dog’s ear with a Q-tip twice a day until the redness and swelling fades.
  • JOINTS AND MUSCLES: Older dogs and cats tend to suffer from joint and muscle pain, even if they cannot vocalize that pain to you. You can create your own soothing blend by blending a few drops of Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Wintergreen together in a carrier oil. Rub along the problem areas to ease discomfort.
  • MOOD AND BRAIN FUNCTION: Teenagers aren’t the only ones with mood swings and sensitive emotions! Your dog or cat could benefit from a calming or grounding blend that helps him feel more tranquil, especially during thunderstorms, large parties, or other frightening events.
