Sandalwood – Benefits, Uses and Interesting Facts

The spicy, woody, warm, sweet aroma of Sandalwood makes it a very important ingredient in oriental perfumes. Almost 90% of East Indian Sandalwood is used in perfumes, soaps and cosmetics.

The Sandalwood tree reaches maturity at age 40 and reaches heights of 50 feet. The centre of the trunk is called the heartwood and it is the heartwood and the roots which contain the beautifully fragrant oil.

The greatest oil content is reached at maturity and steam distillation is used to extract the oil. One mature tree can yield up to 200 kg of oil.

Santalum Album

Santalum Album is indigenous to South India and is unfortunately nearly extinct. Years of poaching and over-harvesting due to huge demands of the perfume industry has taken its toll.

The ecologically responsible alternative to Indian Sandalwood is grown on a large scale in Western Australia. Here the tree grows to a height of about 20 feet and bears fruit within a period of 5-10 years.

Australian Sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum)

Australian Sandalwood has a woody soft scent with a balsamic undertone.

The exporting of Australian Sandalwood to China goes as far back as the mid 19th century in 1844. The Chinese used the oil to produce incense for Buddhist worship.

The Australian Sandalwood Tree is native to a large portion of Western Australia, where it grows about 20 feet tall and bears fruit within five to ten years. The stem, branches, and root ball are all placed through steam distillation to extract Sandalwood Australian essential oil. This distillation process can take four to seven days, which contributes to the oil’s cost.

Due to its popularity, the Australian government has limited harvesting to sustainable levels. This has helped this popular oil to remain an ecologically responsible alternative to wild Indian Sandalwood.

New Caledonian Sandalwood (Santalum Austrocaledonicum)

New Caledonian Sandalwood essential oil is a variety cultivated sustainably to meet the demand for Sandalwood without endangering the Santalum Album.

The New Caledonian Sandalwood tree is native to the South Pacific island of New Caledonia. The small tree flowers after a period of 6-7 years. Fruit matures in a short period of three months.  Sandalwood is obtained by using the process of steam distillation of the wood.

To produce valuable Sandalwood oil with high fragrance levels, Santalum trees need to be a minimum of 15 years old.

Interesting Facts About Santalum Album

It is an evergreen tree that grows from Sandalwood fruits resembling small black berries. Germination from the seeds of the fruits takes about 20 days.

The roots of these seedlings attach themselves to nearby plants, grasses and trees. The young tree depends on other plants for nourishment for a period of 7 years and in doing so cause the other plants to die.

History Through The Centuries

This fragrant essential oil has played a huge role in many different religions and the Sandalwood tree is considered holy.

In Hinduism Sandalwood paste is used in rituals and ceremonies and

In Jainism Sandalwood paste is mixed with saffron.

In Buddhism the oil is used to produce incense for worship

While Chinese and Japanese religions use it in worship and different ceremonies.

Health Benefits Of Sandalwood Essential Oil

  • It is believed to improve mental clarity; this is one of the reasons why it has played such an important role in various religions.
  • A natural aphrodisiac, just add a few drops to massage lotion and mix with Ylang Ylang or Rose oils.

Hydrating and Healing Powers of Aloe Vera

The Aloe plant is a typical example of why you should never judge something based on the external appearance alone.

Part of the cactus family, the characteristic pointy and fleshy leaves of the Aloe Vera plant can make it seem quite intimidating, but the sticky, slimy gel inside is anything but! This gel is so highly concentrated in vitamins, nutrients and minerals that it’s no wonder the ancient Egyptians referred to this plant as “the plant of immortality.”

Aloe Vera can be consumed to obtain all of these incredible nutrients for optimal health, as well as applied topically, where it provides the skin with some truly remarkable benefits.

With over 200 active compounds including antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins A, C and E and minerals including calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, potassium and copper, Aloe Vera is excellent for an array of skin conditions and is an ingredient everyone should keep in their home.

Read on to find out a few ways Aloe Vera can benefit your skin:

Aloe Vera helps to hydrate the skin without leaving a greasy feel, making it ideal for people with oily complexions. Because it absorbs so quickly it can be used as a daytime moisturiser either alone, or under makeup, where it acts as an excellent primer to prevent makeup from flaking or peeling, and helping it to last longer throughout the day.

It’s no secret that Aloe is most well-known for its ability to instantly soothe sore, red and inflamed skin. Aloe works so well for sunburn, or other painful skin conditions, because it instantly provides the skin with a protective, moisturising layer while the antioxidants and nutrients get to work to repair and heal the skin quickly. These anti-inflammatory properties make Aloe an ideal natural ingredient to treat and prevent acne breakouts, leaving your skin clearer and healthier.

Antioxidants including vitamins C and E help to repair and promote the formation of collagen, an important structural protein necessary to keep the skin taut, plump and firm. These antioxidants also help to fight off free radicals that may contribute to the signs of ageing.

5 Essential Oils to Use as Natural Insect Repellents

Naturally occurring essential oils are derived from plants. Given the fact that plants are sedentary and unable to run from predators, many developed essential oils as a form of protection from harmful pests such as beetles, aphids, or other critters. Now, many people adopt the protective benefits of essential oils to use them for their natural insect repellent properties, instead of opting for the harsh chemicals that many conventional insect sprays and candles employ.

Read on for our five favourite essential oils to protect from insects.

The most famous of the natural insect repellents, Citronella is incredibly effective at warding off the pesky pests, especially mosquitos and fleas. Citronella oil works by effectively masking the scents of food sources that mosquitos and fleas are naturally attracted to (such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid), which works to disorient them.

Clove oil might remind you of the holidays, but it is also one of the most effective natural bug repellents. Clove oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Clove oil can irritate the skin and must be diluted before it is applied.

Bug spray and repellents are known for their harsh chemical smells. One benefit of Peppermint essential oil is that it contains potent pest-fighting compound, but doesn’t leave the wearer smelling like cleaning supplies. Peppermint both kills and repels mosquitoes and is a wonderful natural insecticide. Peppermint also has natural anti-inflammatory compounds and is additionally very soothing on inflamed insect stings and bites.

How many times have you been sitting around a campfire enjoying yourself, when all of a sudden a horse fly wages a full on attack on your ankles? Ouch! It’s time, to keep Thyme essential oil in mind. Multiple studies have found Thyme to be both a natural horse fly insecticide, as well as an excellent mosquito repellent.

What can’t Tea Tree essential oil do? This natural powerhouse is a known anti-parasitic, which means it is capable of suppressing the growth of parasites such as lice, ticks, and fleas. The oil can also soothe bites if the pests get to you first.
Just remember, before you reach for the strong smelling and chemically harsh bug sprays this campfire season, pause and remember the strength and power of naturally occurring essential oils. Give them a try, they will not disappoint!

Whether your at a picnic, party or spending more time outdoors, there’s nothing worse than being bitten by bugs during the warmer seasons. Our latest blog helps you avoid this with 5 essential oils to take the sting out of your bites this Summer!

Wake Up Feeling Uplifted

There’s nothing worse than jumping out of bed in the morning with 15 minutes to spare before you have to rush out the door.

You run around trying to get everything together, and you’re lucky if you have time to take two bites of your toast and a sip of your coffee.

Doesn’t sound like fun does it?

Your mornings should be a time where you tend to yourself and no one else. It should be a time when you prepare yourself for the rest of your day.

Unfortunately, most people wake up with no time for themselves which leads to increased stress and anxiety throughout the rest of the day. Not good!

So, how do you fix that?

How do you wake up each morning and get yourself ready to tackle whatever the day has in store for you?

It’s as simple as creating morning habits. We’ve put together 5 of our favourites, but if you find only one or two that work for you, go right ahead and use it. It’s all about doing what makes you feel good.

As you wake up, your mind is rested and is probably as calm as it will be for the day ahead, so this is the best time for meditation. Some people prefer sitting in silence, while others reap the benefits from a guided meditation or even a chanting meditation. This is the time you can use to set your intentions for the day, before your mind starts to race thinking about everything that awaits you.

It’s tempting I know, most of us do it, but as you wake up don’t let your phone be the first thing you check. You’ll instantly be overloaded by the latest news, gossip, and whatever else your timeline is feeding you. By keeping your phone out of the bedroom, you reduce the risk of spending too much time scrolling aimlessly through social media which has many negative effects on our mental health. Not a good way to start your day.

By turning on your favourite playlist in the morning, you allow yourself to be open to experiencing the positive feelings and memories tied to those familiar songs. Turn on your tunes while you make a healthy breakfast, or while you take your morning shower. And there’s nothing wrong with busting out a few moves!

This can be writing in your journal, playing the guitar, or even early morning gardening. When you wake up and do something that simply makes you happy, even for just 30 minutes, your mood will improve, you’ll feel fulfilled, and set yourself up for a productive day.

What we smell has a direct impact on our emotions, so waking up in the morning and smelling something that makes you feel uplifted is sure to be a great start to your day! A simple way to make the most of scents is to place a few drops of essential oil into a diffuser and have it turned on in your bedroom as you wake up.

A few of our favourite uplifting scents to get you started in the morning on a positive tone are:

The Top 3 Reasons To Use Rosehip Oil

If you’re searching for a magic ingredient to keep your skin smooth, youthful, and free from blemishes, you’ve come to the right place. Rosehip oil is rapidly gaining a reputation as a powerful and natural way to nourish and hydrate the skin while fighting dark spots, scars, and fine lines. In fact, style and beauty icons like Victoria Beckham, Miranda Kerr, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the Duchess of Cambridge all swear by rosehip oil to maintain their radiant complexions. That’s enough proof for us!

A Bit About Rosehip Oil

Also known as rosehip seed oil, this skincare goldmine is harvested from the seeds of rose bushes found mainly in Chile. Vitamins, antioxidants, the ever important essential fatty acids can all be found in rosehip oil, and they work together to heal the skin and prevent further damage. In the words of Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr, “I like to wear rosehip oil at night. It’s full of many antioxidants and it really works on a cellular level too to rejuvenate the skin. I put that on at night and I wake up glowing.”

But we are hardly the first to realize the power of rosehip oil. Ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Mayans, and Native Americans, all relied on rosehips for their healing properties. Cold-pressed rosehip oil is by far the best option because it is unaltered by heat and filled with the maximum number of nutrients.

Rosehip Alleviates Eczema and Scarring

Rosehip oil is a favorite natural solution for people struggling with eczema. Its myriad of nutrients like essential fatty acids and vitamins help the oil to promote skin regeneration. Essential fatty acids are also emollients, meaning they improve skin flexibility and provide skin with the strength to repair itself. Vitamin A in particular also plays an important role in healing eczema because it can improve skin tone and texture. All of the same ideas apply to the reduction and healing of scars as well.

Rosehip Prevents Age Spots

Age spots are often called sunspots, since UV rays cause damage that results in discoloration on the skin. Rosehip is bursting with antioxidants that fight the free radicals that cause UV damage. This, combined with the oil’s essential fatty acids and vitamins, will improve skin pigmentation, texture, and tone.

Rosehip is a Natural Botox Alternative

Botox has become a very popular noninvasive procedure because it helps the skin look smooth, but it only lasts about three months before wearing out, and of course it comes with certain risks. Rosehip is a natural botox alternative because it fights fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin A and C, both found in rosehip oil, are known to stimulate collagen production. Vitamin A in particular has small molecules that penetrate deeply into the skin. As the vitamins boost collagen levels and improve the skin’s moisture, wrinkles and fine lines will automatically diminish.

If you’re ready to see how rosehip oil can transform your skin, purchase a cold-pressed rosehip oil from a source that you can trust. Apply it on the face each night. SInce it’s gentle and light, it will absorb right into your skin and get to work. Then you can just lay down, sleep, and wake up to a face like Miranda Kerr’s!

Your Guide to Using Essential Oils on Your Pet

How much do you love your dog? Is his food more expensive than yours? Does she have a bigger wardrobe than you do? When you go away for vacation, is his kennel nicer than your resort? You may not know this, but essential oils give you an entirely new set of tools with which to spoil your furry friend.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for cosmetic, emotional, and medicinal purposes, but only recently have they gained recognition by the general public as a reliable and value alternative to common pharmaceuticals, household cleaners, perfumes, skin care products, and more. Rather than spending one week’s paycheck on the items you need to help your dog stay healthy, you should consider investing in a few select bottles of essential oils. Not only are they more affordable, but they are also safer and more effective for your pet than most store-bought choices.

In fact, Dr. Richard Palmquist, chief of integrative health services at Centinela Animal Hospital and a past president of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, explains that, “Oils have been shown to have many possible desirable effects such as reducing anxiety and inflammation, fighting oxidative processes, battling toxins and fighting infections by inhibiting bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Oil odors can be used to affect mental states and memory.”

Basic Pet Precautions

Essential oils are incredible, no doubt about it, but they need to be used on your dog or cat with caution.

  • Remember that your pet is smaller than you, so he only needs a fraction of the essential oils that you would use.
  • Always, always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil or grapeseed oil. This ensures that potent oils don’t burn or hurt your pet, and it also helps you stretch your oil supply! If your pet is small, always limit oil use to 5 drops, and be sure to dilute up to 90% before application.
  • Stay far away from the eyes, nose, and private areas. Sounds like common sense, but a reminder can’t hurt.
  • Cats are more sensitive than dogs, and they cannot withstand “hot” oils like Clove, Oregano, CInnamon, Wintergreen, Thyme, Birch, and Tea Tree. They also may be sensitive to citrus oils, so observe and err on the side of caution.

Two Application Options

Just like with humans, pets can enjoy essential oils aromatically and topically. Aromatherapy is a powerful and simple practice that can benefit you as much as your pet. Simply buy a diffuser or blend a few drops of essential oils into a water bottle and spray on your dog’s bed or favorite space. You can also apply diluted essential oils topically to your pet’s body, even on your dog’s toes and pads.

What Do I Do If….

The trickiest thing about essential oils is researching which types are best for specific health problems or concerns. This basic guide will give you a great place to start when you want to help your pet heal the natural way.

  • SKINCARE: Lavender and Frankincense are two of the most popular skincare essential oils because they can clean the skin and sooth irritations. Use a cotton ball or ear swab to blend coconut oil and 1 drop of essential oil, then apply it on the impacted area. You can also add a few drops into your dog’s shampoo to stimulate essential oil action during every bath.
  • DIGESTIVE DISCOMFORT: We all know how miserable stomach problems can be, so we don’t want our pets suffering any longer than can be helped! One drop each of ginger, Peppermint, and Tarragon make a great digestive blend when added to a bit of carrier oil and rubbed directly on your pup’s stomach.
  • RESPIRATORY SUPPORT: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Laurel Leaf are the most popular essential oils to include in a respiratory blend their components can clear airways and support healthy lungs. Combine a few drops in a spoonful of coconut oil and apply to your pet’s paw or scruff of the neck. You can also diffuse this blend into the air.
  • EAR HEALTH: This one applies only to dogs. Ears can become dirty and swollen very easily, so it’s important to care for them in a safe way. Mix 2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Tea Tree, and 2 drops of Geranium in a tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply the mixture to your dog’s ear with a Q-tip twice a day until the redness and swelling fades.
  • JOINTS AND MUSCLES: Older dogs and cats tend to suffer from joint and muscle pain, even if they cannot vocalize that pain to you. You can create your own soothing blend by blending a few drops of Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Wintergreen together in a carrier oil. Rub along the problem areas to ease discomfort.
  • MOOD AND BRAIN FUNCTION: Teenagers aren’t the only ones with mood swings and sensitive emotions! Your dog or cat could benefit from a calming or grounding blend that helps him feel more tranquil, especially during thunderstorms, large parties, or other frightening events. Lavender, Sandalwood, and Roman Chamomile are a few of the best calming oils to diffuse in the room or apply to paws.

The process of using essential oils to support your pet’s health couldn’t be easier, especially once you find the blends you like the most and learn exactly how your pet responds to each. Have fun!
