In the past few years, essential oils have finally been recognised in mainstream society for their many incredible properties. From holistic health remedies to spring cleaning, there’s nothing essential oils can’t do. And thanks to websites like Pinterest, essential oils have now become some of the most highly utilised resources in Do-It-Yourself projects.

Whether you already have a stash of essential oil goodies or you need to build up your supplies before the holidays, you can use essential oils for DIY holiday gifts that will allow you to give generously to the people you love without blowing your budget.  Begin by accumulating the following materials, then browse the DIY holiday gift ideas below to select how you’ll spoil your friends and family this season.

Invigorating Sugar Scrub for Coffee Lovers

We all have at least one passionate coffee lover in our lives, the ones who can’t quite formulate full sentences without a morning cup o’ Joe. This DIY Coffee Sugar Scrub recipe blends the sweetness of sugar with the bitterness of ground coffee beans for a gift that promises alertness.

Preheat oven to 275° Mix cocoa butter and coconut oil into dish and place in oven until melted. Fill large bowl with ice and place dish with coconut oil and cocoa butter into the ice. Add sweet almond oil and stir. Let that mixture sit until it is only slightly warm, then gradually stir in sugar and coffee grounds. Package it up in a festive mason jar and deliver to the appreciative recipient!

Aromatherapy Playdough

For any young children -or young-at-heart adults- in your life, this aromatherapy playdough will provide a fun toy that also provides health benefits. You can choose an essential oil blend to use in this DIY holiday gift recipe, like Lavender for a child who struggles to calm down or Lemon to encourage focus and clarity.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 tbsp liquid cooking oil
  • Your choice of food colouring
  • 6-8 drops of essential oil

Simply stir the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together in a saucepan, then add the water, cooking oil, and food colouring until smooth. Heat on medium-low and stir until the ingredients form into balls. Remove from heat after the mixture feels like playdough, let cool for 4 minutes, and then knead in your essential oils.

Special tip: Store in refrigerator in airtight container for best results.

Extra special tip: If you know any children that struggle to pay attention and concentrate, blend three drops Peppermint with three drops Orange essential oil. This blend will encourage focus in a play-oriented manner.

Lavender Body Bars

It’s no secret that Lavender is the ultimate essential oil for dry, tired, and irritated skin, so Lavender Body Bars make excellent gifts for just about anybody! The ingredients in this recipe can soothe itchy and dry skin, bug bites, burns, and so much more.

Melt beeswax, coconut oil, and cocoa butter in a saucepan until liquid. Remove immediately from the stove, stir in essential oils, and pour into moulds of your choice. Candy canes or Christmas trees for the holiday spirit! Simply let the moulds cool and then remove and package.
